Movies provide an excellent and highly entertaining source of language training for English students of all ages and levels. They offer valuable exposure to the numerous sounds of English and different cultures as well as being a fabulous source of new and advanced vocabulary. When combining English audio with English subtitles, movies can be used to help you work on all language skills including listening and understanding, reading, spelling, and, of course, speaking. In this course we will work with a selection of different movies in both British and American English, thus providing you with a wide range of accents, topics and cultural backgrounds. You will watch the movies at home (in ENGLISH and with ENGLISH subtitles; all films are available on DVD or streaming services of your choice), and we will discuss plot, story and characters in class and will practise vocabulary and pronunciation. Traditionally, the northern and western regions of Scotland have been home to the Atlantic grey seal, an aquatic mammal that has long served as a powerful symbol of cultural identity and of distant, otherworldly realms. With its remarkable ability to move effortlessly between sea and shore, the seal has become deeply woven into the fabric of Scotland’s myths and legends. Within these storytelling traditions, it is endowed with a unique form of shapeshifting magic, transforming into the mysterious “Selkie.” In this course, we will listen to and explore a range of Selkie stories told by native Scottish voices.
